After gradutating from the Glasgow School of Art in 1991 Robina Yasmin set up her studio in South London. She has since established herself as a painter of subjects that enthral and uplift the viewer, passing on a sense of vibrancy and majesty. Widely associated with paintings of giraffes, zebras and beach scenes Robina is known for depicting her subjects in a new light. Seeking the less familiar perspective and encouraging the viewer to look into corners that might otherwise be overlooked. With a sense of exploration she uses her subjects as a vehicle to describe light. For it is light that inspires her the most. The falling of shadows across a zebras body or giraffes head balanced by areas of contrast is brought out with feather like brush strokes, whispering across the surface. Compositions are of paramount importance in her work. Relative shapes, curves and lines all play a critical role in achieving a visual and therefore emotional harmony. In her view using the beauty and vibrancy of paint she wishes her paintings to, as hard as it may be 'pass on the magical feeling of freedom one gets whilst on holiday'. Kira J Fincke |
